Shop Previews

Iam excited to share some photos from our first shoot. Barbara and I wanted to buy a lot of pieces off of each other, but ultimately showed some self-restraint and agreed that we should probably debut them in the shop instead. I didn't realize until things were set up how well a lot of the items we've sourced can be effortlessly classic wedding decor or fresh additions to most any space.

Stay tuned for the grand opening!

Coming Soon

If you're reading this, thank you for taking the time to do so. I hope you'll forgive the virtual tumbleweeds around here, but I promise this upcoming news was worth the wait. I've been working on some exciting stuff and I can't wait to share this very consuming but exciting venture with you.

My partner Barbara and I have been curating an awesome collection (at least in my opinion) of vintage goods which will launch in several phases: to start we will open with a collection of housewares and gradually progress to jewelry and accessories. In the third phase we will release a line of handmade goodies.

You can look forward to its debut in the coming month, and a few food posts in between. Until then, I'll leave you guys with this behind the scenes picture of a few treasures we've stockpiled. The hardest part so far has been trying not to keep it all. ;-)

Time to get shooting!

Technicolor Inspiration

Succulents: I love plants and nurturing them. Unfortunately, if plants could talk, the ones I've "nurtured" would tell a different story. I have killed every single pot of orchids anyone has ever bought me (total count: 5). Cactuses, on the other hand, are notoriously low maintenance and so far I haven't killed a single one! They're not only easy to take care of; they're such a unique and varied plant.

Lighting: We (mostly I) have been hunting for a lamp to light up our living room, and I like almost every single version of Robert Abbey's Delta lamp, from the jewel tones to the pastels. Out of my price range for now, it goes for $150.91. Check out all the colors here: lampsplus.com.

Midcentury Modern: It's no secret that I am crushing hard on mid-century modern design. Friends have come to my apartment and told me that they feel like they stepped into the 50's, and in case you're wondering, I think that's very much a compliment. I've been keeping my eye out for aqua shell chairs on craigslist.org. Wouldn't it look great paired with an industrial steel work desk?

Spring Shoes: I got shoes on the brain! Madewell.com has the cutest selection of staples, and while I don't think these are a necessity, it's hard not to be drawn to shiny things. Blame the raccoon in me. Madewell's Metallic High Road Sandal also comes in other less visually-demanding colors: madewell.com.

Pillows: There are those who sleep with 8 pillows on their bed, and then there are those who lounge on the sofa buried beneath an 8-pillow avalanche. I am most definitely not the former and most certainly the latter. In the coming months I plan on updating our couch by mixing and matching some pillows from crateandbarrel.com and dwellstudio.com.

Rugs: We ordered this "Magic Carpet Rug" for our living room because we need something to brighten up the space, and my hope is that this will easily draw from every other color we have in our living room. It's very affordable at $64, so grab it while you can from urbanoutfitters.com.

Sunnies: Ray Ban Clubmasters, Wayfarers, D&G, House of Harlow. Those are just a few styles and brands of sunglasses I frequently ogle but am too stingy to shell out for. I think these SUPER Lucia cat eye sunnies could be universally flattering and I can't resist transparent pink frames. At $163 (available from piperlime.com), I will be making sure they're a perfect match before I commit.

I have some cool posts in the works for you, so stay tuned!

Margaret

Vintage Treasures Part Deux!

BY NOW I had hoped someone would pay me to do their shopping for them, but since I've had no such luck on that front, I am growing increasingly fond of the idea of opening up my own little vintage boutique or vintage housewares/upcycled furniture shop. I love when classic things get a fresh twist! It's also worth mentioning that this flicker of inspiration has been fueled by my late-night Mad Men marathons.

Here are some things I've bought in the last few months:

1. Buying secondhand leather shoes is one exception I've made to buying animal products.

2. Although it appears to be vintage, this dress is from Anthropologie. I couldn't resist scooping it up for—you guessed it!—a wedding in September. :o)

3. This quartz bracelet is currently one of my favorite things! It's made partially from vintage materials—eight lemon faceted circular quartz crystal beads and three quartz crystal faceted transparent square beads.

4. I needed a cute way to store my runaway spare buttons and jewelry. This vintage octagonal shadow box is both functional and pretty. I think shells or rocks (which I also collect) would look nice displayed in a case like this too.

5. It's probably no surprise, but yellow is one of my favorite accent colors. I love this alarm clock just for decoration; my cell phone works fine as an alarm clock. Plus I just can't resist a good deal!

1. 1980's Nicole Club Leather Sandals, etsy.com/shop/LapineOurs.  2. Anthropologie Spiced Dress, anthropologie.com.  3. Quartz Bracelet, etsy.com/shop/KimDulaney.  4. Octagon Shadow Box, etsy.com. 5. Vintage Alarm Clock from West Germany, sacantiquefaire.com.

Speaking of retro gone mainstream, be sure to check out the highly anticipated collaboration between Mad Men Costume Designer Janie Bryant with Banana Republic on BR's 50's-inspired Mad Men Fall collection.

What are your latest purchases, and would you buy any of BR's Mad Men pieces?

For the Love of Vintage

EVER SINCE my parents taught me the word "discount", I knew I was destined to save and scrimp my pretty pennies. If it were up to her, my mom would never even throw out the expired ketchup packets she swiped from Mickey D's many moons ago. My parents always bought the best for me and my sister, but their garage sale-going ways somehow stuck with me to this very day. Ever the collector, one of my favorite hobbies is estate-examining, Goodwill hunting, and flea-market frequenting.

Centerpiece floral bowl by Haeger, $13.

Tribal purse from India, $10.
Tooled leather purse from Africa, Brahmin purse, from Momsy.

80's textured turquoise cocktail dress, $35.

70's purple pleated dress, $6.

Reasons to Shop Vintage:
  • Unique! Vintage is a euphemism for OLD, aka not current! Trendsters need not read on; for nonconformists, it means you're way less likely to see anyone else with the same thing.
  • Affordable... most of the time. Most of the time pre-loved items are cheaper because they're secondhand. Some vintage items can be much pricier if they are antiques. I take precautions and wash or dry clean items before wear, and I don't buy things where the ick factor, whether real or imagined, is just too great--like shoes, socks, or lingerie.
  • Reuse, reduce, recycle. Instead of buying something new, why not scour the thrift shops first? Buying secondhand means conserving natural resources used in the production of a new item, like fuel for shipping or energy to produce. Furthermore, pollution (factory emissions, dumping of dyes or chemicals) is not an issue, and you are saving those items from going into a landfill. If you are interested, look into popular stores like Buffalo Exchange or Crossroads Trading Co. that allow you to buy and trade in used clothing.
  • The hunt! I get an adrenaline rush haggling and scoring awesome deals, waiting with baited breath to hear a counteroffer. I also enjoy talking to the seller about the history of the item because it lends a more personal quality to what I'm purchasing.

Flashback: Alice in Wonderland Video Game Launch Party

G
ET INSPIRED by our trip down the rabbit hole and into Wonderland! Last year while Cupcake and Cookie Confections was still up and running, we helped out with the launch of Disney's Alice in Wonderland video game party. I thought I'd take a trip down memory lane and show you the cute setup, in case you didn't get a peep over at the old website.

Brightly colored paper lanterns were key to setting a Wonderland tea party atmosphere.

All of the tables had cute cake stands stocked with sweets, cold pitchers of tea, vintage tea cups and saucers, fresh-picked flowers, lace, and more paper lanterns:

I'm also offering some vintage Wonderland-inspired teacups and saucers for purchase if you're interested! Contact me at cupcakecookieevents@gmail.com to work out prices, shipping, and all that good stuff.

Hope you have lots of fun planning your party!

Spices... in the Fridge?

GOT A KITCHEN full of spices that are just dying to be organized? Want a new take on the spice rack? Or maybe you just need a cute way to store some of your cooking goodies. It's no secret that I am obsessed with miniatures, so when I attended a housewarming party awhile back, I was immediately drawn to the hostess's idea of using a tin vintage toy refrigerator for storage purposes.

The one pictured below was purchased off of eBay for a mere $10, but you can check out your local flea market or antique shop for toys like this. The fridge may look small, but each rack holds up to 9 spice jars. If you're mathematically challenged, that means a total of up to 27 spices!
